On a recent visit to Normandy to undertake further research on D Day, I came across the Museé No.4 Commando Museum.
Founded by veterans, its purpose to preserve the memory of the 1st Battalion of Naval Fusiliers.
A commando unit established by Commander Philippe Kieffer as part of No. 4 Commando, Royal Marines.
The only French unit to take part in the Normandy landings – Sword Beach on 6 June 1944.
In 40+ years that I have been exploring WWII history and more specifically D Day I have rarely experienced such an interesting & informative Museum.
I would highly recommend a visit to this wonderful “little gem” if visiting the Normandy coast.
So often the British and US story is told of D Day, but this highlights and remembers the contribution of French troops, which I think is so important.
“Lest we forget”.
