The D Day experience Southsea, Portsmouth is a must for anyone who has an interest in the D Day campaign, it has some excellent displays (not least the Landing Craft Tank).
It also recently featured on the local BBC News with the 80th anniversary soon to be upon us.
Indeed, there have been a number of recent reports associated with the D Day Operation Overlord campaign. Some of these are;
- The story of a 103-year-old veteran who served as a WREN with the Royal Naval Service prior to the invasion and was involved in mapping the Normandy coastline in preparation for the actual invasion.
- The mini submarines that were used in early 1944 to get close to the beaches at Omaha and Gold to gather important intelligence to aid the invasion plans. The submarine was just 51 foot in length, with a crew of 5 people.
It also involved 2 men swimming to the shoreline under the cover of darkness to assess the beaches suitability for tanks.
These are just a few examples of actions and activity that made the actual invasion on June 6th to take place and be a success.
“Lest we forget”.
