The Longest Yarn

The Longest Yarn – knitted D Day models.

In over 40 years of studying & researching military history and in particular the D Day invasion I have never come across such a fascinating story about the event.

Featured recently on BBC news the story of the “Longest Yarn” set out the activity of people in a number of countries. Even though it had started with just one person, using wool & yarn to create a range of amazing pieces.

Ultimately the project too some 800 hours to complete all of the knitted pieces.

In addition, some of the figures were based on actual people who had taken part in the D Day landings on 6th June 1944.

Along with the figures of people (real and otherwise) there were also a wide range of vehicles and tanks produced in this way.

So, France has the Bayuex Tapestry, and we now have the Longest Yarn.

Of course, the name the Longest Yarn is a play on the title of the epic war movie the Longest Day.

It is admirable that there are people who are finding ways of making sure that the memory of this momentous event and more importantly the brave people involved is not forgotten.

“Lest we forget”.
